About two weeks ago Proton Managing Director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir confirmed the coming of a budget Lotus. This Lotus should cost about a quarter of any Lotus car in the current line-up. Mr. Tahir: "If everything goes on well, the affordable Lotus will be done and assembled in Malaysia. Both Lotus and Proton have agreed on the plan." Syed Zainal continues to say that Lotus should become less UK-based, and that Proton (as owners of Lotus) will be putting more Lotus into its Proton. We can't help but wonder though about the acquisition rumours concerning Proton and VW, maybe we'll be seeing a Lotus-VW sports car in the somewhat distant future.
