According to a recent report, McLaren is attempting to set a new Nürburgring lap record with the P1 XP2R.

Details are limited but rumors have suggested the model was only able to lap the Nordschleife in 7:04 on previous attempts. This simply won't do as Ron Dennis has previously said the model is "going to be the fastest car in the world" and lap the Nürburgring in less than seven minutes.

The company is also facing pressure from the Porsche 918 Spyder which posted an impressive time of 6:57. Shortly after the record was announced, Marc Lieb said the car could be even faster so it's possible that Porsche could attempt to retake the record if the P1 beats it.

Even Nissan is getting in on the action with their upcoming GT-R Nismo but it looks like a long shot as our spies have said the car posted a lap time of 7:28.
