Mazda is apparently toying around with the idea of a crossover based on the recently unveiled Mazda3.

Rumors about a smaller crossover to slot below the CX-5 emerged towards the end of last year when we heard about a CX-3 based on the next generation of the Mazda2. However, a recent report indicates the smaller crossover is going to ride on the Mazda3 platform but it still hasn't been green-lighted for production.

Mazda Australia has asked its Japanese parent for a high-riding derivative of the all-new Mazda3 and their response was "we will study." Mazda3's deputy program manager admitted other markets besides Australia have also expressed their desire for this car which would compete with the Subaru XV.

If it will become a reality, the crossover will be compatible with an all-wheel drive system since the Mazda3 uses the same architecture as the CX-5. If there will be such a model, Mazda says it won't be just a copy of the Subaru XV.
