BMW is currently analyzing the prospects of increasing i3 production after a high number of preorders which have exceeded the company's expectations.

Even though the car won't be available in showrooms until next month, more than 8,000 customers have preordered the electric/hybrid compact city car. This is an impressive number taking into account the 2014 BMW i3 is far from being affordable, with a starting price at home in Germany of 34,950 EUR while in the United States it costs 41,350 USD.

At a press conference held in Amsterdam, BMW's Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner said "if demand holds, which is what it's looking like, we will soon have to invest more." The automaker expects to shift 10,000 units next year but "will adjust capacity according to demand."

It should be noted those with range anxiety issues will have the possibility to use a regular car if they buy the i3. BMW is offering the chance to acquire a feature which will allow customers to book a conventional-powered car for several weeks each year as backup.
