According to a recent report, General Motors' full-size SUVs could receive a number of different powertrains in the future.

While the models - the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban, GMC Yukon / Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade - are slated to be launched with a 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8, General Motors' executive chief engineer of trucks hinted "We've got some interesting powertrain technologies coming on the SUVs over the next few years."

Jeff Luke declined to go into specifics but confirmed the company is considering both hybrid and diesel engines. Speaking of the latter, Luke said Jeep is offering a Grand Cherokee Diesel in United States and "we're watching."

While it remains unclear when additional engines could arrive, the full-size SUVs are slated to adopt an eight- or ten-speed automatic transmission in the future. This should improve fuel-efficiency as the current gearbox is an outdated six-speed unit.
