From September Toyota will begin sales of the mildly updated 2009 model year Rav4 featuring a new entry level engine and some subtle interior and exterior modifications.

The biggest change is found under the hood, the 2.4-liter engine is replaced with an all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder power unit – a low-friction design optimized for performance and fuel efficiency,it also features Dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). Power is increased over its predecessor from 166hp and 165 lb-ft. of peak torque to 179hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. The new engine is mated to a new four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission which is smoother yet more responsive than the current system.

Design modifications on the exterior include a redesigned grille and front bumper, new side mirrors, new 17inch wheels and a restyled rear end. The Sport Appearance Package for the 4WD V6 RAV4 model features a redesigned rear door featuring chrome accents and no spare tire. The interior gets a bunch of additional chrome accents and the Sport Appearance Package now includes an AM/FM six-disc CD changer with six speakers, MP3/WMA playback capability and integrated XM® Satellite Radio.

Pricing for the updated model will start from $21,500, the average price of the model range will increase by $224 or 0.9%.
