The Porsche 918 Spyder is inching closer to production and Jay Leno recently got to test drive the model at Pebble Beach.

While the clip doesn't reveal too much, it shows the surprising and loud transition that occurs when the petrol engine kicks in.

As we have previously reported, the 918 Spyder has a mid-mounted 4.6-liter V8 engine, two electric motors and a 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The engine produces 608 HP (447 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque, while the motors contribute 156 HP (115 kW) and 129 HP (95 kW). All told, the car has combined maximum output of 887 HP (661 kW) and more than 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

In terms of performance, the 918 Spyder can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.8 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 340 km/h (211 mph). Despite the impressive numbers, the car is relatively frugal as it averages approximately 3.3 L/100km (85.6 mpg UK / 71.2 mpg US) and has CO2 emissions of roughly 79 g/km.

Interestingly, 918 Spyder Project Head Frank Walliser revealed the model will only be able to 10-16 miles (16-25.7 km) on electricity alone as a opposed to previous estimates of 18.6 miles (30 km).
