A mule of the next-gen Volkswagen Passat has been spotted by our spy photographers conducting testing in the United States.

Just like last week, the spy photos are showing the Variant version featuring a new front fascia which remains hidden under the camouflage. With these mules Volkswagen is testing out a new engine, giving us the opportunity to take a glance at the front air intakes of the next-gen Passat.

Scheduled to come out sometime in 2015, the all-new model will ride on Volkswagen's MQB platform which also underpins the seventh-gen Golf. As a result, weight will be slightly reduced and combined with more efficient engines we are expecting fuel consumption to go down.

The new Volkswagen Passat will likely be unveiled in September 2015 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
