General Motors CEO Dan Akerson has revealed some new details about the next-generation Chevrolet Volt.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Akerson said the model will have a "significantly" improved electric-only range. When pressed for more information, the executive hinted the car would be able to travel 50 to 60 miles (80 to 96 km), or possibly even more, on electricity alone. If GM is able to achieve these numbers, it would be an impressive feat as research shows 80% of drivers travel less than 40 miles (64 km) per day.

Akerson also confirmed the next-generation Volt is three to four years away and has previously said it could cost $7,000 to $10,000 less than the 2013 model which starts at $39,145 (excluding an $850 destination charge).
