Volkswagen has announced their new EA288 diesel engine will arrive in the United States during the second half of 2014.

The engine will produce 150 bhp (111 kW) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque and be offered on a variety of 2015 models including the Golf, Beetle, Passat and Jetta. It promises to be more eco-friendly than the previous 2.0-liter TDI as it has low-friction bearings, a two-stage oil pump and a new exhaust gas recirculation system.

In a statement, Volkswagen Group of America's general manager of the Energy and Environmental Office, Oliver Schmidt, said "With the introduction of the new EA288 engine, we are excited that our family of TDI Clean Diesel vehicles is continuing to improve and will be even more clean, fuel efficient and powerful."

While diesel engines are relatively rare in American cars, Volkswagen holds a commanding 78 percent of the market with sales exceeding 47,000 units this year.
