Volkswagen has released new details about their Car-Net telematics system.

Set to be offered on certain 2014 models - Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, CC, Beetle, Beetle Convertible and Eos - in the United States, the Car-Net system is an OnStar-like service that can be accessed in the car, online or through a smartphone app.

Notable features include:

  • Automatic Crash Notification which connects the driver to a Car-Net customer specialist when an accident occurs. The specialist can then forward the car's location to emergency services if needed.
  • Agent Destination Assist which enables users to send destinations directly to car (when equipped with GPS navigation).
  • Last Parked Location which shows where the car is parked.
  • Remote Vehicle Status which enables users to check the status of the doors, lights, sunroof, hood, convertible top and trunk.

The Car-Net system also has Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Assistance and Service Appointment Scheduling.

Customers who buy a Car-Net equipped vehicle will receive six months of free service. When this expires, they can purchase additional service for $17.99 a month, $199 for a year, $378 for two years or $540 for three years.
