Our spies have already caught  2015 Freelander mules and new details are starting to emerge about the upcoming model.

Autocar says the crossover will drop the Freelander name and become part of the Discovery family. The move is reportedly part of a decision to create three separate brand identities including Range Rover, Discovery and Defender.

While the replacement for the Discovery / LR4 will ride on the Range Rover’s PLA platform, the Freelander replacement will likely be based on an extended version of the Evoque's LR-MS architecture. Two versions are reportedly in development and they are expected to include a five- and seven-seat variant.

The models will reportedly be powered by a variety of AJ-200 four-cylinder engines including a supercharged unit.

The Freelander replacement is expected to be introduced late next year likely as a 2015 model.
