Mercedes has introduced a handful of electric vehicles, like the B-Class Electric Drive and SLS AMG Electric Drive, but their future could be short-lived if the Vito E-Cell is any indication.

In a recent interview with Car and Driver, Mercedes van boss Volker Mornhinweg revealed that demand for electric or hybrid vans is virtually nonexistent. As he explained, the company received several hundred orders when the Vito E-Cell was launched but demand quickly disappeared. Unsurprisingly future electric vans have been axed and put into “hibernation mode.”

In related news, Mornhinweg hinted the next-generation Vito and Citan could be offered in the United States. He also revealed the Viano will likely adopt a new name when the redesigned model comes to market.
