The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will be this year's pace car for the Indianapolis 500.

The 97th edition of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" is scheduled for May 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will be the 12th time when a Corvette will be used as a Pace Car, a tradition which started back in 1978.

A week ago Chevrolet announced the Stingray has a starting price of 51,995 USD for the coupe and 56,995 USD for the convertible. For an extra 2,800 USD the cars can be equipped with an optional Z51 Performance Package which brings an electronic limited-slip differential, tweaked suspension, bigger brakes, optimized gear ratios, transmission cooling system, along with 19-inch front / 20-inch alloys.

The seventh-gen Corvette is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine rated at about 450 bhp (336 kW) and 609 Nm (450 lb-ft) of torque. It will do 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds and should return more than 26 mpg US (31 mpg UK or 9 liters / 100 km) on the highway.
