It seems Audi is having advanced negotiations with Fiat for purchasing Alfa Romeo.
Over the last few years Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne repeatedly said he is not interested in selling Alfa Romeo but apparently he has has a change of heart. According to sources close to him and Audi's CEO Rupert Stadler, negotiations between the two parties are very advanced and they also include Fiat's Pomigliano assembly plant. If this deal will take place, Audi will build Alfa Romeo models at that factory.
In addition, Fiat is allegedly interested in selling its Magneti Marelli auto parts division as a move to raise more funds. Audi wants to purchase a components manufacturer and set up an R&D arm in Italy where they currently have an important stake.
There's no smoke without a fire and this "fire" could be fueled by Volkswagen's CEO Martin Winterkorn who previously said although he's not considering a 13th member in VW's portfolio for the moment, he is "always wide awake to what's happening in the world."
