Except for the Bertone-styled 1978 Dino GT4, all Ferrari models produced since 1951 were designed by Pininfarina. The new LaFerrari was created by Ferrari's own team without support from Pininfarina. The design house/coachbuilder did propose a version of the car but Ferrari decided to opt for its own version due to aerodynamic and technical advantages.

This doesn't mean Ferrari and Pininfarina have separated as the two are working on two other models, according to Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo. It should be noted three years ago Ferrari hired Flavio Manzoni (who used to work for VW) for its styling department.

Pininfarina's chairman Paolo Pininfarina described LaFerrari's design as "definitely driven by function." Both parties insist their relationship is still strong, but even so, the door has been opened and we should expect more in-house designed products from Ferrari in the future.
