Alfa Romeo is allegedly working on a BMW 5-Series / Mercedes-Benz E-Class rival due in 2015.

The Italian E-segment model will use Maserati underpinnings and is envisioned as a successor for the Alfa Romeo 166. Although Fiat chief Sergio Marchionne said last year the company is focusing on replacements for the Mito, Giulietta and 159, it seems they are now also working on a new premium sedan.

It will be Alfa's version of the Maserati Ghibli (arriving next month) and is likely to borrow the V6 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine with about 385 hp (287 kW) and the V8 3.8-liter twin-turbo with around 480 hp (358 kW). Chances are both cars will also be sold with a diesel engine which could be a V6 3.0-liter from the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300. Like the Ghibli, the Alfa Romeo model is slated to receive an all-wheel drive variant.
