The booming market for SUV’s has automakers working hard to bring out even more, and especially smaller ones that get relatively good gas mileage in this era of record high oil prices. BMW’s X3 has led the way for German manufacturers in this area, but recent spy photos have captured other German marques readying their offerings such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X4.

The new Mercedes, to be called the GLK, is a smaller version of the GL-Class with similar styling. The GLK has boxy styling, looking like a miniaturized G-Class. Under the skin the GLK will be based on the W203 platform of the C-Class. Engines will include a range of four and six cylinder models, both gas and diesel. Naturally, Mercedes' four-wheel-drive system, 4MATIC, will be offered.

These latest shots capture the GLK driving in the US and Germany in addition to two artist renderings of what the GLK could look like. The new GLK is expected to be introduced sometime in 2008.
