W121 SL Interior 1955-1963
When the SL Debuted as a racing platform for the 1952 racing season it immediately became a legend winning 4 races in 5 appearances. After the racing platform created buzz around the newly debuted SL series vehicle, Mercedes began selling the W121 in 1955. Elvis had just hit the music scene and the Rolex Submariner was just starting to build its reputation as the essential collectors watch.
W113 SL Interior 1963-1971
The second-generation w113 series SL debuted in 1963 and quickly earned the nickname 'Pagoda SL' thanks to its uniquely shaped hardtop. The W113 series was a massive sales success and quickly built on the reputation created by the original SL. Rock and Roll was hitting its stride and loafers were all the rage.
R107 SL Interior 1971-1989
The R107 SL debuted in 1971 and ran for an astounding 18-year production cycle. With its V8 engine, the R107 took the SL into a completely new plain of performance. Digital watches and AC/DC took the world by storm as the third generation SL went on the huge sales success.
R129 Interior 1989-2002
The R129 SL replaced the R107 in 1989 and elevated the SL with its option V-12 engine. The R129 also saw innovative safety features like an automatic rollbar which deployed when it detected a rollover. The R129 also saw the first large-scale implementation of screens on the SL series.
R230 SL Interior 2001-2011
The R230 hit the scene in 2001 and was the first SL to use a metal folding roof instead of a fabric roof traditionally used by SLs. AMG versions of the SL debuted during the R230 generation with the SL 65 AMG version producing 600 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.
R231 SL Interior 2012-Present
The latest SL debuted in 2012 with the R231 and is still on sale today. The R231 saw a masterful implementation of screens for the infotainment and a host of innovative safety features following in the SL's tradition of being the safest sports car on the road. With growing competition both internally from the AMG GT and externally the SL's faces a tough road ahead to remain relevant.
