As part of its Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program, BMW will give industry leaders and prominent figures in business, politics and entertainment, among others, a hydrogen-powered BMW 7-series for their daily use. Hollywood actor extraodinaire Will Ferrell known for playing lead role in such comedy classics as 'Blades ot Glory' and 'Anchorman', was the first to take delivery of the Hydrogen 7 on August 16. Ferrell will "help BMW in its mission to build widespread support of hydrogen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels." Some of the Hydrogen 7's other ambassadors include Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere and Sharon Stone, who've taken the car to the red carpet at various movie premieres.
Only 100 units will be produced and BMW emphasizes that the Hydrogen 7 is no longer a concept car, "but a production model vehicle that has successfully completed the entire Product Development Process, meeting all the standards necessary for driving on U.S. roadways." Nonetheless, it will not be for sale to the general public.
The Hydrogen 7, originally unveiled in September 2006, is powered by a 256 hp (191 kW) twelve-cylinder hydrogen combustion engine that thanks to its dual-mode power unit can fluently switch over to conventional gasoline if hydrogen is unavailable. When the car runs in hydrogen it emits essentially nothing but water vapor.
