VW promises "a ground-breaking design, greater ranges."
Volkswagen is trying to eliminate the need of spy photographers by periodically releasing teaser images of its new models, depicting camouflaged prototypes in their full glory. The brand did it with the T-Cross last year, then followed the new Golf a few days ago, and now it’s also previewing its first volume all-electric car, the ID.3, with a photo of a slightly disguised test car. The Germans are promising the EV will offer “a ground-breaking design, greater ranges, impressive driving dynamics, and spacious interior” when it debuts in Frankfurt next month.
The automaker is especially proud of the fact that “any concerns about battery range are a thing of the past” as the ID.3 is available with three different battery packages. There’s an entry-level 45-kWh battery option, a slightly larger 58-kWh pack, and a flagship 77-kWh package, which provide a range of between 205 and 342 miles (330 and 550 kilometers), depending on the battery, measured by the WLTP cycle. A quick 30-minute charge provides juice for approximately (180 miles) 290 kilometers. What’s even more important, Volkswagen guarantees the capacity of the batteries for eight years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km).
The batteries feed an electric motor at the back, which generates 204 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and should let you “accelerate rapidly” with the pedal to the metal. The starting price for the ID.3 will be below €30,000 in Germany, which translates to roughly $33,300 at the current rates. Production of the model will kick off before the year’s end with first deliveries planned for mid-2020. Volkswagen is already accepting deposits for the Edition 1 series, of which just 30,000 will be made.
The ID.3 is the first production model of the brand to be based on the new MEB platform. It will be followed by the high-riding I.D. Crozz, featuring two electric motors for an all-wheel drive and a combined power of more than 300 hp (224 kW).

The ID.3 follows the Beetle and the Golf to introduce the third major chapter of strategic importance for the history of the Volkswagen brand. Back in mid-May, Volkswagen enjoyed a successful launch taking pre-bookings for the ID.3 1ST Edition1, an exclusive special edition boasting fantastic levels of equipment, limited to a run of just 30,000 vehicles.
What is certain is that any concerns about battery range are a thing of the past with the ID.3. That's because the ID.3 has three different battery sizes available; a large battery (77 kWh net2), a medium-sized battery (58 kWh net) and a small battery (45 kWh net). A range of between 330 and 550 kilometres (as per WLTP) is possible depending on the battery selection. Thanks to its excellent charging capacity, a range of approximately 290 kilometres can be recharged in just 30 minutes (at 100 kW charging capacity). Volkswagen will also guarantee the capacity of the ID. batteries for eight years or 160,000 kilometres.
And, as the base price for the ID.3 series production model will be below the EUR 30,000 mark in Germany, this means it will be an electric vehicle for everyone. Another highlight with the Group’s first electric vehicle is the fact that the ID.3 will be carbon-neutral over its service life if buyers consistently charge their vehicles using renewable energy.
There is no shortage of driving pleasure either; putting your foot down on the ID.3 1ST will see you accelerate rapidly, all thanks to its rear-wheel drive and 150 kW / 204 PS engine performance. Production of the ID.3 is due to start as planned at the end of 2019. The first vehicles are due to arrive by mid-2020.
