Maserati is considering a Porsche 911 rival expected to come out by 2015.

The mid-engined rival will be available with V6 and V8 engines and will get the chassis of the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C that will be unveiled next month in Detroit. By 2015, Maserati plans on selling 50,000 units annually and this new model will play a major role to reach this goal. This is a very bold objective as in 2011 the Italian brand delivered only 6,159 cars.

Sales numbers are expected to go up thanks to the new Quattroporte, a smaller sedan called Ghibli and the new Levante SUV. The 911 rival could get the GranSport moniker with power coming from a twin-turbo V6 with about 450 hp (335 kW) and a twin-turbo V8 delivering 550 hp (410 kW). The V6 model is expected to be offered exclusively with a RWD layout, while the V8 model will be optionally available with AWD.

Maserati is targeting a 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) weight and a starting price of less than 100,000 GBP.
