One of Airstream's most defining features is its aluminum exterior shell. However, it wasn't the first travel trailer company to use the shiny metal. That honor goes to Bowlus – a 1930s travel trailer company that produced an estimated 80 travel trailers before ending production in 1937. Over half of the original trailers are around today. The brand roared back to life several years ago as Bowlus Road Chief with the aluminum-clad On The Road model, and it's now introducing the Road Chief Endless Highways that's perfect for those looking to live off the grid.

The crowning feature of the Endless Highways travel trailer is its innovative battery power-management system, which features 4-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron-phosphate batteries that allow for battery operation of appliances for up to one week between recharges, according to the company. The batteries can also operate the trailer's 10,000 BTU air-conditioner for up to four hours on a single charge. There's also an optional 120-watt solar panel to recharge the system, which is storable in the closet. For electricity nerds, the Endless Highways features a "2,000-watt pure sine-wave inverter with the ability to boost 120-volt AC power from 15 to 30 amps."

Bowlus combines its off-the-grid capability with a suite of sweet features. Battery power can operate the high-efficiency 12-volt fridge/freezer and microwave. A two-burner Italian cooktop integrates into the countertop while the trailer also features a stand-alone shower, stainless-steel sink, full-length mirror, vanity with medicine cabinet, and continuous hot water. The trailer also has an 3G/4G modem and GPS that provides a private WiFi network.

Unlike the flexible seven-sleeper Knaus Boxlife, the Bowlus Road Chief Endless Highways can accommodate up to four people comfortably, offering real-wood walls and ceilings, in-floor heating, and an interior designer to personalize the trailer. However, such off-the-grid luxury living comes at a price. The Endless Highways starts at $185,000 with financing available for as low as $942 a month. No one said living off the grid would be cheap, but at least it's luxurious.
