Toyota has opened its 3.5-hectare Proving Ground test site in Japan for testing road-to-vehicle communications.

Toyota has started full-scale operations at its Proving Ground test site located in the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

The 3.5-hectare Intelligent Transport System can simulate an urban environment thanks to its “faithfully replicated” roads and traffic signals. It benefits from a road-to-vehicle communications system that includes a pedestrian detection system, a vehicle detection system, traffic signals, a course monitoring system and control devices.

Utilizing a continuous exchange of road-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle information, Toyota is developing next-gen vehicle-infrastructure systems that will lower the risk of accidents involving other cars and pedestrians in an intersection. In addition, TMC’s future systems will help increase fuel efficiency and support safe driving.
