The race to improve fuel efficiency has led Ford to develop a new Hybrid EV+ system that promises to maximize the electric-only range of hybrid vehicles like the C-MAX Energi and Fusion Hybrid.
By accessing GPS data from the SYNC system, the Hybrid EV+ system learns where a driver frequently stops (ie: home or work). When the system's predictive software algorithm is confident that they're within an 1/8 mile (200 meters) of a frequent stop, the car can stay in electric-only mode to reduce fuel consumption and limit CO2 emissions.
According to Kevin Layden, Ford's director of Electrification Programs and Engineering, “We know from our research that hybrid drivers want to drive as often as they can in electric-only mode, especially near their home or frequently visited locations. EV+ not only delivers that capability, but also demonstrates how Ford puts customer needs and wants above everything else.”
Those fearing the big brother aspect of the technology can turn the system off and completely erase all their saved data.
