The Audi R8 e-tron recently set a lap record for production electric vehicles at the Nürburgring, but a new report is indicating the model is in jeopardy.

According to Car & Driver, development work on the electric sports car has been halted. This is peculiar because the model was slated to be launched later this year and all indications were that development work was nearly complete.

Regardless, the magazine says the model is under review at the request of research and development chief Wolfgang Dürheimer. This means the car will likely be delayed and could, according to sources, be axed altogether.

Little is known about the reasons for the sudden review, but speculation suggests the company thinks there aren't enough customers to justify the model's development.
