The most affordable car right now in the UK is the second generation of the Dacia Sandero which begins from only 5,995 pounds. This price is for the entry-level Access version that comes with 15-inch steel wheels, 60/40 split folding rear seat, power assisted steering and daytime running lights. Other than that, it comes with ABS with emergency brake assist, electronic stability control, ASR traction control, as well as driver/passenger/front side airbags.

Pay 600 pounds more and you get the midrange Ambiance variant equipped with a radio CD player with support for AUX, USB and Bluetooth, along with electric front windows, remote central locking, 15-inch Colorado wheels and body-colored bumpers.

The high-end Laureate version starts at 7,995 pounds and brings AC, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, electric rear windows and cruise control. For an extra 250 pounds the Sandero Laureate can get a seven-inch touchscreen navigation and multimedia system.

Three engines are available, starting with the 1.2 16V 75 that returns 47.9 mpg UK and has CO2 emissions of 137 g/km. There’s also the 0.9 TCe 90 with stop/start that allows the second-gen Sandero to return 54.3 mpg UK and have CO2 emissions of 120 g/km. The third engine is a new 1.5 dCi 90 returning 74.3 mpg UK and less than 100 g/km.
