A custom Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid has managed to hit a top speed of 185.394 mph (298.363 km/h).
German carmaker Volkswagen has revealed in a press release the other day that a custom 2013 Jetta Hybrid has managed to achieve a new speed record for a hybrid. Driven by Motor Trend writer Carlos Lago at Bonneville Salt Flats, the vehicle managed to hit a top speed of 185.394 mph (298.363 km/h).
In order to achieve this impressive maximum speed for a hybrid, the car’s powertrain was heavily modified by VW’s R&D in Wolfsburg, Germany. The project included making the necessary changes to enable the Jetta Hybrid run safely on salt, customization which was the responsibility of A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering. Volkswagen says that the aforementioned 185 mph run is the fastest one ever achieved by a hybrid model based on a production version on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
As a reminder, the regular Jetta Hybrid is motivated by a 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder TSI gasoline unit that pumps out 150 hp and an electric motor that generates an extra 27 ponies. The engine is linked to a DSG dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission.
