This video is the perfect example for understanding the progress made in car safety. In the exact same area where an accident occurred last year, Jeremy Foley and his co-driver went off at Pikes Peak's Devils Playground. Both of them were rushed to the hospital but they were soon released without any life threatening injuries.
Without a rollcage that can resist impact several times the vehicle's weight, the situation would have been dramatically different. It's not just the rollcage as rally cars nowadays have a long list of safety features, such as fuel systems that will be automatically disconnected in case of an accident, along with seats, harnesses, helmets, arm and neck restraints that all come together to keep the person inside the car safe. In addition, rally cars also have an on-board fire suppression system that will activate on its own, without the intervention of the driver.
