Chevrolet is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Corvette by giving us a look back at the model's history.

Originally unveiled as the XP-122 concept at the 1953 GM Motorama, the car received critical acclaim and was quickly green-lighted for production. While the company only planned to build about 150 Corvettes, demand pushed Chevrolet to build 300 models in 1953.

Given the overwhelming response, GM moved production to a St. Louis, Missouri plant which was better equipped to handle construction of the advanced sports car. This enabled the company to build 3,640 Corvettes for the 1954 model year.

Over the course of six generations and sixty model years, Chevrolet has sold more than 1.5 million Corvettes.
