General Motors may have abandoned one area of sports advertising when they decided not to participate in the Super Bowl commercial party, but a new avenue appears to have surfaced. The American auto maker is set to announce a marketing deal between its Chevrolet brand and Manchester United.

A group of selected journalists have been invited to an event in Shaghai on Thursday when the full details will be revealed.

The English football club is one of the biggest powers in the sport having been crowned national champions no less than 19 times as well as winning the coveted European Cup three times. A recent study also reported Manchester United has a fan base of 659 million people which translates just short of 10 percent of the world's population.

With this in mind, General Motors tie up with the sports team could prove to be a positive move. Chevrolet has enjoyed strong success in United States, but there hasn't been as much to celebrate on the other side of the pond.

The marketing deal may be seen as an ideal opportunity to raise the profile of Chevrolet in European markets.
