A report from British magazine Autocar has surfaced stating the 1-Series sedan will become a reality in 2015. It is being geared up to be one of the brand's best selling vehicles and will be targeted to buyers in key markets such as the United States and China.

As the dimensions of the BMW 3-Series have grown, it has left a gap in the market for the brand to produce a sedan version of the smaller 1-Series. The new model would essentially be a spiritual successor to the E30 series that ended production in 1994.

The new body style for the 1-Series range will ride on a rear-wheel-drive platform that will use many components from its 3-Series sibling. The same system will also be used for the 1-Series GT and an optional all-wheel-drive system is likely to be available as well.

A range of four- and six-cylinder units will form the engine line-up and an electric version is also under consideration.
