The BMW 3-series range is on the receieving end of a few updates for the new model year.

BMW 3-series xDrive

It starts with the introduction of the xDrive four-wheel-drive system that will be optionally available for the first time with the 320i, 328i or the 335i. The electronically controlled system distributes power between the front and rear wheels to give the model the best possible traction and also adjusts dependant on the road conditions.

BMW has also stated xDrive will be available for the 320d at a future date.

BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition

The 3-series range will also be extended with the introduction of the frugal BMW 320i EfficientDynamics Edition.

It is largely based on its diesel equivalent (320d) and uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine that generates 170PS (125kW / 168hp) coupled with either 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. CO2 emissions are rated at 124g/km while fuel economy is 5.2L/100km and it can also accelerate from 0-100kph (0-62mph) in 7.6 seconds.

Entry level BMW 316i

A new entry level model will be added in the form of the 316i that is powered by a four-cylinder engine producing 136PS (100kW / 134hp). Performance is measured by a 0-100kph(0-62mph) time of 8.9 seconds while it also offers CO2 emissions of 134g/km. No fuel economy rating was specified yet.

Enhanced BMW 3-series M Sport Package

The final update for the 3-series range is an upgraded M Sport package that will be available from July. It includes an improved M Sport braking system that features 18-inch front/17-inch rear lightweight brake discs as well as 18-inch or 19-inch allow wheels with a star spoke design.

Other highlights of the M Sport Package include sporty front and rear bumpers, side sills and the optional BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line for the exterior.
