MG has arrived in Beijing with the new Icon concept car that previews a possible production SUV for the brand.

It draws its inspiration from the MGA and MGB GT sports cars that were produced up until 1980. The rounded headlights and rectangular grille clearly stems from the latter of these while the huge arches over the rear wheel attain their personality from the MGA.

The Icon features a coupe-like profile and rear-hinged rear passenger doors that enable easier access for occupants that sit in the back. Insiders have confirmed the company plan to bring the Icon to production by 2014 and it is also possible that the model could spawn an open top roadster variant as well.

A target price of roughly £16,000 has been mentioned with the majority of manufacturing conducted in China followed by final assembly at MG's Longbridge factory in Birmingham, UK.
