Volkswagen has announced plans to introduce the 2013 Beetle TDI at the Chicago Auto Show.
Looking virtually identical to its petrol-powered cousin, the TDI is distinguished by special badging, additional chrome trim and unique 17-inch aluminum wheels.
Interior changes are limited, but there's a supplementary instrument pod which has a stopwatch and oil temperature / turbo boost gauges. Options include a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof, a Fender audio system and GPS navigation.
Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine with 140 PS (103 kW / 138 hp) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. It can be connected to a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch transmission, which enables the model to return an estimated 29 mpg city / 39 mpg highway (US).
The 2013 Beetle TDI will go on sale this summer, but there's no word on pricing.
