BMW has announced plans to invest $900 (€705 / £586) million into their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant to gear up for production of the X4 crossover.

BMW has announced plans to invest $900 (€705 / £586) million into their Spartanburg, South Carolina plant to gear up for production of the X4 crossover.

While the company declined to release details about the model, it will be based on the X3 which is also built at the plant.

Designed to battle the Porsche Cajun and Range Rover Evoque, the X4 will reportedly be launched in 2014 with a variety of four- and six-cylinder engines. Styling will be heavily influenced by the X6 and model is expected to measure approximately 4.65 meters (15.25 feet) long.
