Spies have captured images of  a 2013 Toyota Yaris Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) protoype testing alongside a non-hybrid 2012 Yaris model.

Known as the Vitz in Japan, the third generation Yaris hit European markets towards the end of last year following the debut of a hybrid concept in Geneva earlier in the year.

The Yaris HSD concept featured aerodynamic styling with crisp character lines and a massive air intake which also resembles the front end of this prototype seen in the photos. However, missing are the concept's LED daytime running lights, a prominent roof spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear bumper diffuser and a solar panel roof.

As the name implies, the Yaris is equipped with Hybrid Synergy Drive. It is likely the HSD system that is used in the Prius and Auris HSD will be passed down to the Yaris. This means we can expect a 98 hp (73 kW / 99 PS) 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine as well as an electric motor that develops 80 hp (60 kW / 81 PS).

The Yaris HSD is expected to launch later this year.
