According to a recent report, the 2014 Volkswagen Passat will ride on the new MQB platform and weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs) less than the current model.
The Euro-spec Volkswagen Passat is starting to show its age, so it isn't terribly surprising a replacement is coming in 2014.
According to Autoweek.nl, the redesigned model will ride on the new MQB platform which will also underpin the next-generation Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. This switch will reportedly enable the model to weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs) less than the current Passat.
Engine options remain a mystery, but there's word of a plug-in hybrid variant with approximately 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp) and an electric-only range of 50 km (31 miles). Additionally, the petrol engines will likely have a start/stop system and the diesels could be outfitted with NOx catalysts to meet Euro6 emission standards.
We can also expect additional standard equipment including an infotainment system and Bluetooth/iPod connectivity.
