Toyota Motor Company has launched the Aqua hatchback in Japan today. Also known as the Prius C for international markets, the entry-level hybrid boasts fuel efficiency of 35.4 km/L (83.3 mpg US; 2.8L/ 100km).
The Aqua is powered by a 1.5-liter Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) producing a combined motor and engine output of 100 PS (98 bhp / 73 kW). The petrol engine system features a cooled Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for improved efficiency in the high-expansion-ratio Atkinson cycle engine. Also aiding engine efficiency is a battery-powered water pump. Unlike conventional belt-driven waterpumps, this beltless design reduces friction on the engine and allows precise control of coolant flow.
Starting price for the Aqua is 1.69 million yen ($21,700). TMC plans to sell 12,000 units per month in Japan.
Meanwhile, TMC has also announced its TRD and Modellista aftemarket product range for the Aqua hybrid. Starting with the TRD, there is a new front bumper lower apron with integrated LED lights, side skirts, rear bumper lower apron with diffuser style. Also available are a new set of wheels, firmer shock absorbers and springs plus stainless cat-back exhaust system with dual tips.
For the Modellista package it's much of the same as the TRD package but their are two versions. Each with 5-piece body kits containing front and rear aprons, side skirts and roof spoiler. Uprated suspension, wheels and exhaust muffler are also available.
