Smart admits the "rule-breaker" concept is a bit "tongue-in-cheek" in the face of the mega-pickups of today.
Smart has announced the For-Us urban pickup concept set for world premiere next month at the Detroit Auto Show.
Smart admits the "rule-breaker" concept is a bit "tongue-in-cheek" in the face of the mega-pickups of today. Despite this, the For-Us is targeted to the "young and young-at-heart with active lives who attach importance to low emissions and taking up minimum road space." So for those looking for a "practical loading concept" that could fit in the bed of a typical pickup truck, don't get your hopes up.
Measuring 3547/1506/1701mm (L,W,H), the two-seater For-Us concept is quite tiny. It features an electrically powered tailboard that opens and retracts and has a 900mm cargo area that can hold and recharge two smart ebikes with a built in docking station.
The For-Us is driven by a 55 kW (75 hp) magneto-electric motor, the same one used in the smart fortwo electric drive, and produces 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque. Maximum speed exceeds 120 km/h (75 mph) and the lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kWh.
The Smart For-Us concept will make its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 12 January.
