In a recent interview, Volkswagen R GmbH General Manager Ulrich Richter revealed the division's "future is diesel and all-wheel drive."

The executive declined to elaborate, but told Autoblog any Volkswagen model could be offered in R guise. This isn't too surprising considering we're already seen everything from a Polo R prototype to a Golf R Cabrio concept.

Interestingly, Richter downplayed hybrid technology and discussed the benefits of weight reduction by noting "You can get the same efficiency [as a hybrid] by dropping 100 kg (220 lbs)." Unfortunately, carbon fiber is too expensive - for mainstream use - but aluminum should play an important role in future products.
