As Mazda prepares to say goodbye to the RX-8, the company's PR department has tweeted they are "zealously working on new models to house the next-generation rotary engine."

This raises a few eyebrows as Mazda's executive officer of product planning and powertrain development, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, recently confirmed they have halted development of future rotary engines due to economic conditions. Regardless, rumors have suggested the company was considering an alliance with Audi to create a new Wankel engine.

We're cautiously optimistic, but hopefully the tweet will be followed up by a more substantial press release.
