Volkswagen of America has announced pricing on the U.S.-spec 2012 Golf R.

The three-door Golf R comes with a sticker price of $33,990 and a solid set of equipment including 18-inch wheels. The Sunroof and Navigation models start at $35,490 for the three-door hatch and $36,090 for the five-door.

The U.S.-spec Golf R comes with a 2.0 liter TSI unit which makes 256 hp (191 kW / 260 PS) - slightly less than the euro-spec version which is good for 266 hp (199kW / 270 PS) on the all-wheel drive hot hatch.

Fuel-economy is rated by the EPA at 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway but VW cites its own figures at 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway.

The 2012 U.S.-spec Golf R goes on sale in early next year.
