But does it succeed?
The days when MPV were popular are long behind us as more and more people are eager to jump on the SUV bandwagon. Fiat is attempting to rejuvenate its 500L minivan by giving it the S-Design treatment previously applied onto the Tipo, 500X, and the 124 Spider. It’s being billed as a special edition rather than a new trim level and starts off as a 500L Cross before gaining an assortment of styling tweaks.
The people carrier wears a model-exclusive Donatello Bronze paint combined with a black roof and what Fiat refers to as Myron finish accents noticeable on the door handles, side mouldings, front grille, side mirror caps, and the bezel of the taillights. That same Myron look can be seen on the 17-inch alloys reserved to this version, which has also gained tinted rear windows as standard equipment.
Stepping inside the cabin, the fancy-ish minivan continues the exterior’s theme with a series of black accents to spruce things up a bit. For example, there’s a matte black texture applied onto the dashboard adorned with the “500” logo featuring a copper finish. Fiat has also installed posh S-Design seats with double stitching, leather inserts, and that copper “500” logo mentioned before.
Aside from fiddling with the design, Fiat has installed the Uconnect 7-inch infotainment system with support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You’ll also be getting Bluetooth, AUX and USB ports for extra connectivity, while a voice recognition function is also onboard.
Available in Europe, the new 500 S-Design can be had with a 95-horsepower 1.4-liter gasoline engine or with a 95-hp 1.3-liter turbodiesel. The former is hooked up exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox whereas the latter can be optionally paired to a robotized gearbox. If you need more power, Fiat also has a bigger 1.6-liter diesel with 120 hp and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), but bear in mind it’s manual-only.
Will the new S-Design version make MPV buyers rush into their local Fiat dealership to buy one? It seems unlikely, but it should generate some extra sales from people in the market for a raised MPV with a somewhat interesting appearance.

Efficient, high-performing engines, which are also Euro 6/D compliant
Compliant with the more restrictive limits set for in the Euro 6/D standard, the engine range available for the Fiat 500L S-Design features the 95 HP 1.4-litre Fire petrol engine with 6-speed manual transmission, the 95 HP 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbodiesel with manual or Dualogic robotised transmission or the 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet paired with manual transmission.
More in detail, the 95 HP 1.4-litre Fire implements updated software equipping it to respect the new limits, while the refreshed diesel versions fit a new system which integrates SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue* injection to abate nitrogen (NOx) emissions and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to trap and reduce particulate matter all in a single solution.
