It's no secret that the redesigned Mercedes S-Class will be offered as a plug-in hybrid, but a new report is indicating the company is also considering a pure electric powertrain.

Details are limited, but R&D boss Dr. Thomas Weber told AutoCar "At the moment, we are looking at customer demand." If approved, the S-Class would become one of the first EVs in its segment and likely cause Audi to respond with an A8 e-tron.

Furthermore, the magazine says the 2013 S-Class will adopt a head-up display and an interior design that draws inspiration from the F800 Style concept which debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
