Known for their charismatic designs and superior performance, the pack-leading pace cars share a special place in Indianapolis 500 lore.
30 year heritage and E85 concept
This year's Indy 500 marks the 30th year of Chevrolet pace cars at the famous race in Indianapolis and the 10th for the Corvette nameplate. So in order to celebrate, GM has built a special 30 th Anniversary Edition Corvette Z06 Pace Car for the occasion which will have a Corvette E85 Z06 concept as its sidekick.
The Official 30th Edition pace car is painted black and silver to commemorate the 1978 pace car and will be driven by two-time Indy champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Emerson will also be signing all 500 of the 2008 pace car replicas which will be built in both coupe and convertible form. Power comes from a LS3 small block V8 producing 436 hp with either a six-speed manual or six-speed padle-shift automatic transmission and the car will ride on new-for-2008 forged chrome five-spoke aluminium wheels.
The Corvette Z06 E85 concept is not exactly GM's idea but will have its chance to show what it is capable off. Pratt & Miller showed their Jay Leno commissioned C6RS E85 powered C6 at this year's SEMA Show and was hugely popular, so popular that it will go into production. This must have inticed GM to build their own version, but then based on the Z06 rather that a C6 race car.
