A massive car pile-up took place on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway early this past Saturday morning between Sahama and Ghantoot claiming 1 life, 60 injured (9 of which are in critical condition) and 127 vehicles totalled or heavily damaged.

Thick morning fog and speeding are attributed to the cause of the accident which extended two kilometers. Between Jebel Ali towards Al Rahba and Al Samha visibility was reported to be less than 50 meters (164 feet) despite vehicles speeding at 120 km/h (75 mph).

More than 100 Abu Dhabi police cars and 17 vehicles from armed forces, Dubai police, civil defence and ambulances were on the scene within 5 minutes.

The wreckage was cleared within an hour and the re-routed traffic was back to normal another hour later.
