America’s favorite sports car of the last 50 years and the world’s best-selling nameplate in the sports car segment three years straight, the Ford Mustang, is celebrating a major milestone. As hinted by a leak earlier this week, the 10 millionth Mustang has rolled off the assembly lines at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan.

“Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world,” Jim Farley, president of global markets at Ford, commented on the momentous occasion. “I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”

The jubilee Mustang is a white convertible Mustang GT, powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, generating 460 horsepower (343 kilowatts). It’s mated to a six-speed manual gearbox sending power to the rear axle. Ford explains the car is finished in the same color as the first serialized Mustang with VIN 001, produced back in 1964. It also had a V8 engine and a manual transmission.

The milestone was celebrated at Ford’s Dearborn headquarters with flyovers from three WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter planes, as well as a parade of Mustangs from the last five decades. During its production run of 54 years, the Mustang has also been produced in San Jose, Metuchen, and the original Mustang production plant in Dearborn.

The recent, sixth-generation Mustang debuted in 2015, introducing an independent rear suspension and flagship Shelby GT350 / GT350R models. The 2018 model year brought an upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine and styling improvements. In January this year, Ford also introduced the Mustang Bullitt with 480 hp (358 kW) and a six-speed manual.
