Jeep has a long history of rough and tumble SUVs, but a new report is indicating the brand is about to introduce a B-segment supermini.

Details are limited, but Jeep CEO Mike Manley told Autocar "there's definitely space in the market for a Jeep-brand B-segment SUV. We're already working on a project that will meet that need, and expect to have the car on the road by 2013."

The vehicle is expected to be based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform and feature styling that draws inspiration from the Wrangler. Engine options are rumored to include a 1.3- and 1.6-liter JDTm diesel (for Europe) as well as a 1.4-liter MultiAir petrol. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but four-wheel drive will be optional on higher trim levels.
