Audi has unveiled the 2012 A6 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Essentially a sedan version of the A7 Sportback, the redesigned A6 has a conservative design that features LED taillights, an integrated trunk-lid spoiler, a dual exhaust system, and optional LED headlights. If that isn't expressive enough, the optional S-Line package adds modified bumpers, a sport suspension, a faux rear diffuser, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin offers additional interior room as the car's wheelbase has been stretched to measure 2910mm long. While that is certainly nice, we're rather impressed by the cockpit's fashionable styling and high-tech goodies such as a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system and MMI navigation plus with internet connectivity.

Under the hood, five different engines will be available at launch. The most efficient is a 2.0 TDI which has an average fuel consumption rating of 4.9 L/100 km (48.00 US mpg) and C02 emissions of 129 g/km. It produces 130 kW (177 PS) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque, which allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and top out at 228 km/h (142 mph).

On the other hand, the new 3.0 TDI V6 produces 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the car to dash from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, before topping out at 240 km/h (149 mph). With this particular engine, expect an average fuel consumption of 5.2 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 137 g/km.

Moving further up, a second version of the 3.0 TDI churns out 180 kW (245 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. It lets the A6 sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, before hitting a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The average fuel consumption registers 6.0 L/100km and CO2 emissions are 158 g/km.

On the petrol side, there's a naturally-aspirated 2.8 FSI V6 with 150 kW (204 PS) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. Paired to a multitronic transmission, the engine allows the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). It consumes 7.4 L/100 km (31.79 US mpg) and emits 172 grams of CO2 per km.

Lastly, the 3.0 TFSI V6 cranks out 220 kW (300 PS) and 440 Nm (325 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the car to run from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). In terms of efficiency, expect 8.2 L/100 km (26.68 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 190 g/km.

If those options haven't tickled your fancy, Audi will eventually launch a hybrid variant that uses a 155 kW (211 PS / 208 hp) 2.0 TFSI petrol engine and a 33 kW (45 PS / 44 hp) electric motor. Boasting a combined output of 180 kW (245 PS / 241 hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and hits a top speed of 238 km/h (148 mph). Owing to its mediocre performance, the car is expected to have an average fuel consumption of 6.2 L/100 km (38 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of 142 g/km.

The 2012 Audi A6 will go on sale shortly and German prices start at €38,500.
